The Lancelin Dunes are a 'Shared Area' and provide recreational areas for off-road driving, sand boarding as well as the access track to Wedge Island and tourist buses visiting the Pinnacles. Often, when the wind patterns make tracks impassable, new tracks are created by the general public that are only suitable for one-way traffic.
Extreme care needs to be taken by all those who use the area to help prevent accidents.
BE AWARE >>> Medical facilities in Lancelin are minimal. The Doctor does not open the Medical Centre on weekends and the Silver Chain staff is only available for emergencies. The St. John Ambulance Service is operated by volunteers and the ambulance stationed in Lancelin is also required to respond to all other medical emergencies, as well as traffic accidents on the Perth/Lancelin Road and Indian Ocean Drive.
Over the years there have been many serious injuries and fatalities at the Lancelin ORV area, so please exercise caution if you ride there. Always check the back of any dune before riding over it, even if you rode over it yesterday, it may have changed overnight, and be mindful of the other vehicles tearing about as well.
Another danger, especially for newcomers to the dunes, is that the dunes are constantly moving and being eroded by the wind. Riders and drivers by the hundreds have discovered all too late that the back of the gentle sand dune they've been driving up is a sheer drop onto exposed rock. Even at relatively slow speeds this can be a dangerous, if not fatal, situation.
ALWAYS BE AWARE OF WHAT IS HAPPENING AROUND YOU AND LOOK OUT FOR THE SAFETY OF OTHERS.
NUMEROUS DEATHS HAVE OCCURRED IN THE LANCELIN SAND DUNES.
Lancelin is a large (200Ha+) sand dune area that is open to motorcycles and quads of all engine capacities as well as 4WDs and buggies.
You don't need a road-registered bike, or a drivers' licence to ride at Lancelin, but if your vehicle is not road registered you must have Off Road Vehicle registration (available from DPI).
You must wear a helmet, and full protective gear is highly recommended.
